The leaves are falling, the air is cooler as we welcome another season…cold & flu.
Here are some tips to stay healthy & strengthen your immune system during cold and flu season:
- Get vaccinated Stay up to date on vaccinations to reduce the risk of illness. The annual flu vaccine can help prevent the flu and limit complications. RSV vaccination for individuals age 75 and above.
- Practice good hygiene Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water aren’t available, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
- Get plenty of sleep
- Drink lots of water
- Regular exercise
- Home remedies
Try these remedies to help with cold and flu symptoms:
- Chicken soup: Can help with inflammation, rehydration, and infection
- Tea with honey and lemon: Can soothe a sore throat
- Cool-mist humidifier: Can help reduce nasal inflammation
- Salt water gargle: Can help loosen mucus and ease throat pain and nasal congestion
- Vapor rub: Can help calm a cough
- Petroleum jelly: Can soothe an irritated nose or chapped lips
- Sleep with your head elevated: Sleeping with your head at a 45-degree angle can help prevent mucus from building up in your sinuses
